I was totally stumped for a prompt image for this weekend’s Sinful Sunday, then I wonder if Violet had any words beginning with i in her June selection of Big Sexy Words and as it happens she does, identity. I then realised it was a perfect time to showcase my snazzy new trousers which I love btw and also talk a little bit about the words we used to describe our sexual identity.
Not everyone needs or wants to label themselves, including whatever label might express their sexuality. In some facets of life, labels are forced onto people and no one deserves to be forced into a box of someone else’s making, especially if that is detrimental to their well-being.
I think it’s important to know that for many folks labels can be affirming and rather than feeling restrictive they can be liberating. It’s easy to say they don’t matter, but the truth is for many of us they do and people fought and lost their lives to get us to the point we are now. Where many folks can use their chosen label without little or no fear of reprisals.
There is still a lot of work to be done though, coming out still isn’t a safe option for many of our LGBTQIA+ friends and it’s important we remember them and let them know we support them in their need to keep their safety a priority.
For me being a queer bisexual babe is totally part of my identity and I love those labels. I love that as time has gone on they fit me more and more.
I absolutely support those of you who choose not to label your sexuality, please be mindful though when someone is positively discussing their own identity that dismissing labels can often feel disrespectful or like we aren’t being listened to.
